December 2011 I want to start off, by wishing each and everyone a very Happy Holiday and Happy New year for 2012. We have an exciting 2012 lined up on many insurance fraud topics. On Friday January 20th, 2012 the training Committee has lined up Peter W. Schoonmaker from Condon & Cook, LLC in Chicago, IL to talk to us about Bankruptcy Issues in the Investigation and Adjustment of Property Claims. The recent economic downturn has resulted in a dramatic increase in the number of bankruptcy filings. When a first party property loss occurs either shortly before, or during the pendency of, a bankruptcy proceeding, the SIU investigator must be cognizant of issues relating to the jurisdictional power of the bankruptcy court and the trustee as well as issues relating to the insured’s standing to pursue a claim or to pursue litigation contesting the denial of a claim. Furthermore, in any bankruptcy action, the debtor is required to file asset schedules identifying and disclosing both real and personal assets. Depending on the nature of the first party claim, the content of the bankruptcy schedules can be a powerful tool in combating fraudulent or grossly inflated personal property claims arising from fire or theft losses. Many of us have seen an increase of these types of cases with the current economic climate. The presentation is scheduled from 9 A.M. to 11 A.M. Networking and coffee will begin at 8:30 A.M. I hope to see many of you there for this informative presentation. Again, we had a great 2011 and have an even more exciting 2012 lined up. It is our hope that many of you will be able to attend the International in September 2012 and bring back much good information from the training you will receive and tell those of us who are not able to attend what new information is being passed on regarding our daily battle against insurance fraud. The Board asks that if you would like to recommend a training topic/speaker, please make your thoughts known to Ron Gottardo, who is our Training Chair for the Chapter. His e-mail is Ron.Gottardo.ba8k@State Farm.com. It is with such suggestions in the past that our training has stayed on the mark for what the membership needs to be exposed to. As a reminder, please mark your calendars for the meeting dates shown on the website so you are sure not to miss a meeting. Keep in mind that our bi-monthly meetings are held in January, March, September and November on the third Friday of the month, that the Annual Seminar is in May and the July Networking meeting is held at the Bloomingdale Golf Course. The Board hopes to see all of our members at the meetings. Thanks to ALL who make this Chapter the success that it has been and for your support as we go forward. It is YOUR involvement that makes this Chapter what it is. Please renew your membership this month and have your fellow SIU do the same. My best to the entire membership as we move forward toward 2012 and continue in the fight against insurance fraud! As always, If you would like to send David a personal note regarding this President's Corner, feel free to email him at: docarrol@amfam.com |
